PREIMPLANTATION GENETIC DIAGNOSIS

This term is used for the process of identifying genetic diseases in the genetic material of the embryo and then selecting for embryo transfer only healthy embryos obtained during a cycle of IVF.

In our country at this time may be offered diagnosis for cystic fibrosis and beta-thalassemia. To eliminate the risk of some couples at risk of transmitting genetic hereditary diseases was the development of the above technique. Also the technique can be useful if multiple failed attempts because of a chromosomal abnormality. For the first time this technique has been used before by some fifteen years in London and why was the use of biopsy was certified to the sex of the fetus for non sex-linked disease transmission. Our team is working with the new unit of the maternity clinic IVF mother has been a joy to work with the Board of the University Pediatric Hospital Agia Sofia which offers a pioneering program for cystic fibrosis and beta-thalassemia. Already in 1998 born in Greece in the first child at an embryonic stage had been tested for beta-thalassemia.
In Greece we can diagnose cystic fibrosis and beta-thalassemia. This technique was developed in order to eliminate the risk for some couples at risk to transmit genetic hereditary diseases. It can be also useful in cases of multiple failed attempts caused by a chromosomal abnormality. This technique was first used fifteen years ago in London an a biopsy was performed in order to verify the sex of the fetus for non sex-linked disease transmission. Our team is working with the new unit of the maternity clinic IVF "Mitera" and with the pediatric clinic of the University Hospital Agia Sofia which offers a pioneering program for cystic fibrosis and beta-thalassemia. In 1998 the first baby was born in Greece that had been tested for beta-thalassemia  in embryonic stage.
